Next year, Mykiyah plans to be a tattoo apprentice as a way to gain hands-on, real-world experience in the art world. She will have the opportunity to explore tattooing, improve her drawing skills, and decide if she wants to pursue a long-term career in the arts — and potentially as a tattoo artist.
Is there a moment or accomplishment you are most proud of?
I took American Sign Language two times and enjoyed connecting with my teacher Rebecca and learning about deaf culture! I’m proud of myself for participating in school regardless of difficult circumstances throughout my education.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the next year are to participate in a tattoo apprenticeship! In five years I see myself making art and using it to express myself and my experiences. I’ll miss the amazing staff at Hopkins.
Is there a teacher or staff member who you would like to shout out?
Mr. Braaten, Mr. Feulner, and Miss Rebecca all supported me and encouraged me through my time at Hopkins. Mr. Braaten is funny, empathetic, understanding and genuinely cares about my well being. He is a very supportive and kind teacher. Mr. Fuelner pushes his students to put themselves out there and his teaching style allows people to share without feeling judged. Miss Rebecca is the American Sign Language Teacher and she is also deaf. She is really kind and funny and she encouraged me to get better.
What advice would you give incoming kindergarteners?
My advice for kindergartners would be to enjoy your time in school, connect with your peers and find supportive people.
